PIU PIU PIU
Named for a child-like way of making the sound of a gunshot (imagine finger or water guns instead of real ones), Piu Piu Piu is a coffee stand that’s become a cult hit locally and regionally. When you walk up the steps to the first floor of Block 80, you’ll see its founder Unagi, with his many tattoos and most likely wearing some kind of hat.
Inspired by Japanese-style owner-operated coffee stands, Unagi believes in cultivating a coffee experience that is intimate and off the beaten track, but one that is worth travelling for for its unique character and skilled brewing. Piu Piu Piu’s friendly, intimate setting turns a lot of first-timers into regulars and landed it among Big 7 Travel’s top 50 cafes in Asia.
TOMMY LE BAKER
Amidst plants and sunlight in the open-air courtyard in the centre of The Zhongshan Building, Tommy Le Baker is a French-inspired boulangerie famous for its sourdough bread.
Born in Malaysia, Tommy made several detours through Singapore and France before finally settling back here. From his extensive journeys and education abroad, he returned with a mission to restore bread-making to its highest standards and recapture original flavours sought by masters of the tradition. His loaves are kneaded, shaped, and baked on-site using specially selected ingredients, traditional recipes, and time-tested methods. He and his team are constantly at work in the steamy bakery, and the smell of fresh bread is always in the air.
Here, you can also find traditional favourites from artisanal viennoiseries, pâtisseries, gateaux de voyage, to long-forgotten French regional specialities.
